The client brief for this project was to design a two bedroom - two bathroom - two storey executive style townhouse on a tiny 156m² site that is inconveniently transversed by a sewer pipe. The result was this little entertainer that takes advantage of the quaint cobblestone edged laneway and soaks in the city views from the balcony. We employed strategies to wash off the small home footprint by articulating the façade right down to an undercroft garage door, cantilevered balcony and by removing the ‘framing boundaries’ of balcony posts together with clever use of a frameless corner window. Inside we used tall ceilings, minimal but not narrow hallway, under stair laundry, transparency through natural timbers, a generous walk-in-wardrobe and ensuite, a simple well appointed kitchen with a frosted glass window splashback, leading to a detailed walk-in pantry. A large slide-away glass door opens the living space onto a generous balcony, while windows heights are raised to maximise natural light. Add an insulated concrete floor for thermal mass, dual insulation to upper walls, double glazed windows and we have achieved a small home with a much larger and warmer feel.
A pleasurable little project that won the Best Custom Home in its category at the 2022 Master Builders Victoria Awards.
